There really is no place like home. I’ve been away on a three-week adventure across Johannesburg, Namibia, Botswana and Cape Town. And with every adventure, there are new things to learn.
Here are the key takeaways from my experience:
1. You never stop learning
My trip was not only culturally immersive but also a source of scientific learning. When in Africa, the awe-inspiring goal is to see the iconic “big five” – the Leopard, Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, and Rhinoceros – but most miss the little things like the intricate beauty of birds and plants. I became a “birder” and was delighted with spotting various bird species. In Capetown, at a farm called Babylonstoren, I enjoyed learning about the healing properties of plants.
2. Cultivate Patience
Through moments of waiting, we were rewarded with remarkable wildlife encounters. One of which was observing a lioness with her three cubs in the bush, and later joined by a grandmother. This offered an insight into the family dynamics of the animal kingdom. As we followed their movements, we chanced upon a rare sighting where the two lionesses strategically positioned themselves to observe five wild dogs, a species endangered by extinction, stealthily tracking antelopes. We got to watch an intense chase beginning with the wild dogs pursuing the antelopes followed by the lioness chasing the wild dogs. Through our patience, we were granted the privilege of witnessing the delicate balance and interactions within the animal kingdom.
3. Gratitude
Surrounded by the vast expanse of nature, I found myself connecting with a deep sense of peace, perceiving the presence of God in every aspect of my surroundings.
Reflecting on my travels, I am filled with deep gratitude for the abundance of experiences, knowledge and insights gained during this unforgettable trip. There’s a saying that resonates with me: “Invest in experiences over possessions.” As I integrate these lessons into my life, I carry a newfound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all beings and the splendor of the natural world. This adventure has not only expanded my horizons but has also instilled a deeper appreciation for the beauty and harmony that surrounds us.
In loving service,
Rosan
