Almost like normal – but changed. We may be back in Alert Level 1, but no one’s really going to be back to who they were pre-pandemic. I turned to gardening and cooking as ways to cope in pandemic. And I just discovered: I no longer need a TV set to keep me informed or even entertained.
My TV set broke down in the last season of Game of Thrones, and that feels like eons ago, in 2019. Can you believe it? I was going to replace it with a bigger, flatter model and planned to do it when I finished installing the windows. Well, I finished the window work, painted my flat, and updated my kitchen, and I still don’t have a TV set.
The TV was central to my childhood. I grew up watching Sesame Street and cartoons. As I grew older, I would watch series, talk shows, and news which were the focal point of conversation in school.
With my old TV, it’s typically turned on and tuned to the news from morning to evening. It served as background noise, whether I’m getting ready for work, eating, exercising, or working on my laptop. I’d only switch to DVDs to binge on TV series.
After three years with no TV, I finally canceled my cable subscription and realized that I could survive without it.
Since I was cooped up at home, I enjoyed the peace and quiet without the background noise of the news. I discovered I no longer need to be updated with what’s going on. I now get notified about the news through email and open and read what I find important. I can now get entertained wherever, whenever I want, using my laptop or iPad. It doesn’t have to be in a fixed location anymore.
And lastly, cable has become obsolete with the number of streaming services available. I can watch movies, series, documentaries, and now even Talk Shows uninterrupted by ads on Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and watch for free on Youtube. I even got hooked on k-dramas! But now have several paid subscriptions…
As Nathan W. Morris said, “Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly.” This is your life! Be ruthless when it comes to your success. Eliminate what no longer serves you.
Have you had a “life edit” moment? What is something you were attached to before but no longer serves you in pandemic?
In loving service,
Rosan
