As I write this update from Kathmandu, the city is experiencing an unexpected shift in weather – rain and hail are falling, a rare sight this time of year. Meanwhile, reports from the Everest Base Camp (EBC) area tell of fresh snow blanketing the high-altitude trails. The mountains are reminding us of their raw power and unpredictable nature.

Upon arriving here, I sought out a local shaman to receive a blessing for our trek. This ancient ritual, rich with Himalayan spiritual tradition, was deeply grounding. The shaman’s prayers and offerings invoked protection, courage, and clarity for the trek ahead. It was a beautiful reminder that this adventure is not only a physical challenge but profoundly spiritual.

I won’t pretend I’m not feeling both anxiety and excitement.

The sudden weather changes add a layer of uncertainty, and the thought of trekking through snow at altitudes above 5,000 meters is both daunting and thrilling. Yet, as a yoga teacher, I am reminded to breathe deeply, stay present, and embrace the full spectrum of emotions. This journey is becoming a living practice of balance – between fear and faith, effort and surrender.

Tomorrow marks the start of our adventure: an early morning flight to Lukla, known as one of the world’s most dangerous airports due to its short, sloped runway, high altitude, and unpredictable weather, Lukla is the dramatic gateway to the Everest region.

From Lukla, we will begin our trek to Phakding, the first leg of a 16-day journey graded as “C” in difficulty. This means it’s challenging but manageable for those with good fitness and determination. Each day, we’ll walk between 4 to 7 hours, depending on our pace, with two acclimatization hikes built in to help our bodies adjust to the thinning air. Our trek will take us to a maximum altitude of 5,555 meters (18,225 feet), where every breath is precious, and the views are said to be nothing short of breathtaking.

The physical training has been essential, but now more than ever, I’m focusing on mental resilience and spiritual openness. The mountains teach us humility, patience, and presence. I invite you all to join me in sending positive energy and prayers for safe passage-not only for myself and my mentor but for all who venture into these sacred heights.

As the rain and hail cleanse Kathmandu and fresh snow settles on the trails ahead, I carry the shaman’s blessing with me, along with your well wishes.

Thank you for following along on this transformative journey. I look forward to sharing more updates from the trail as we take each mindful step toward Everest Base Camp.

In loving service,
Rosan
