I believe that it’s never too late to do anything! That’s why I joined the Certified Voice Artist in the Philippines (CVAP) program with 60 very talented millennials from all over the country and two Filipinos who are overseas. I’m one of the eldest in class and with the least experience as a voice artist.

I joined the program after watching a yoga student host her radio show. She was so witty and confident! It was like she metamorphosed from being a little bit unsure of herself into a self-assured force. There was a commercial break announcing the third CVAP course that Saturday and I signed up. It would be an intense program, she warned, “That’s why I asked you about your schedule… there’s a mother of five who was able to graduate so you can too.”

As of writing, I’ve created a logo, a tagline, two vlogs using my iPhone X to film, and iMovie to edit. For one, I can’t seem to find the camera on my phone, so I look squint-eyed in the video. I still have pending voice-overs for three TV, three radio commercials from last week, and for this week, five AVPs. Help! I’m praying that I have the perseverance, commitment, and time to complete all the tasks.

It’s important to maintain proper care of our voice and vocal cords, to ensure minimal wear and tear. Sharing these voice hygiene tips from our teacher, Pocholo Gonzales, who calls himself the Voicemaster of the Philippines:

1. Keep hydrated. Drink at least 16 glasses of room temperate water to keep the vocal folds moist.

2. Avoid the following food and drinks:
– Alcohol and coffee, diuretics that would make you lose fluid and cause dehydration.
– Lozenges, a pain reliever that can scratch the vocal folds.
– Spicy food that causes acid reflux, which goes up to the esophagus and can burn the vocal folds.
– Sugar and dairy, which can cause mucus in the throat to thicken, which increases phlegm.

3. Rest your voice. In one hour of speaking, rest your voice for 15 minutes. Try not to be talkative.

4. Try to avoid shouting as well as whispering.

5. Breathe properly, expand belly as you inhale and pull the navel in as you exhale.

And now, here’s my first vlog, made for our assignment on creating a moniker and tagline. I also play a bit of the gong in the video.

How was it? If I were to vlog more, what would you like to see me vlog about?

May you try something new soon, and may you enjoy it!

In loving service,
Rosan
