Tortoises are absolutely the best pets that you could ever have! Not only are they fascinating creatures, but they also bring good health, longevity, and luck. During a recent visit to Zambales, I was introduced to my friend’s six red-footed and two sulcata tortoises, and I was blown away by their unique charms.
First things first: let’s clear up a common misconception. Tortoises are NOT turtles! While both are reptiles, the turtle is aquatic, while the tortoise is land-swelling. Plus, tortoises can survive for an incredible 100 to 150 years, while turtles only make it to 20-30 years. Talk about longevity!
Now, if you’re looking for a pet, here are three reasons why a tortoise is the perfect candidate:
1. They require minimal attention. Forget about long walks, grooming sessions, or baths. Tortoises are happy to be left alone for extended periods and are incredibly easy to feed. They mostly eat flowers and vegetables, and my friend’s pet, for example, loves kangkong, bougainvillea, and periwinkle.
2. They are affectionate. Yes, you read that right! Tortoises are known to show signs of affection and appreciation. They’ll follow their pet parents around, tolerate handling, eat directly from their hands, and come to them when they see them. Who knew tortoises could be such loyal companions?
3. They move slowly, which can be therapeutic. Watching them move slowly and calmly can be relaxing and meditative. Studies have shown that caring for animals can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, ease loneliness, and boost overall mood. So, not only will you have a unique and fascinating pet, but they’ll also help you feel better too!
And, to top it all off, tortoises are symbols of protection and longevity. According to Feng Shui, the tortoise’s shell stands for protection, and its life cycle represents longevity. So, by getting a tortoise, you’ll have a spiritual guardian by your side!
For those who can’t keep a pet, even a low-maintenance one like a tortoise, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the same luck by keeping a figurine of a tortoise in your garden or plant near you.
So, what are you waiting for? Bring a tortoise into your life and experience the joys of having a unique and fascinating pet that will also bring you good health, longevity, and luck!
In loving service,
