A few days ago, someone new to Kundalini Yoga asked me a very honest question: “Why do we chant mantras in Kundalini Yoga?”

It stayed with me, because it’s a question many people carry quietly—especially if chanting feels unfamiliar, awkward, or unnecessary.

If you’ve ever asked yourself why we chant imantras, the answer is simple: chanting works directly with vibration to regulate the nervous system and shift internal states. Mantra is not about belief or musical ability—it is a practical tool that affects the body, breath, emotions, and mind.

How chanting mantras affects the body and mind

As you chant, the tongue touches the roof of the mouth, stimulating points that communicate with the brain and glands. The body responds by shifting hormones—stress chemistry softens, and the system moves toward balance. This is why people often feel emotional release, warmth, or a quiet sense of relief. Nothing to analyze. Just the body letting go.

Chanting brings the tongue to the palate – a zone rich in energetic points linked in somatic and TCM traditions – which helps calm the nervous system and balance the upper centers.

Everything vibrates: your body, your nervous system, your emotions. Stress, joy, fear, and calm are not abstract ideas; they are physical states with measurable rhythms.

Mantra works because repetition changes patterns. A simple sound, repeated with breath and attention, creates a new groove in the nervous system. In Kundalini Yoga, we say sound is the posture for the mind—just as a physical posture trains the body, mantra trains how the mind holds experience.

If you’ve ever wondered whether chanting mantras is “for you,” this is your invitation to stay curious. You don’t need to understand the words—you feel the effect.
