Things are being shaken up – Have you been feeling the shift?
There are so many people I know going through some kind of change this month. This year is really about big decisions and changes. Emmanuel Dagher says, “When an influx of light enters Earth’s atmosphere as we are experiencing now, it organically brings to the surface the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors we have not yet fully addressed, acknowledged, and healed.”
These shifts may make you feel emotional and experience heightened insecurity, doubts and negativity. This is really the time to go inward and meditate. Yogi Bhajan in his lecture on December 31, 1995 warned, “It is not that you have to worry about what I am saying, I’m telling you what is going to be. It is all beyond you. It is the time now…Anybody who lives, thinks, acts, the limited shall be limitedly suffocated to death… Personal mediation, folks, is nothing but daily compound interest on the principle. You default in payment, there will be penalties. You can’t escape it.”
I keep encouraging students who come to class or even see me for private sessions to meditate. Meditate is nothing but the art of breaking habits, of purifying the mind, and taking care of day-to-day things. Yogi Bhajan said that it is a process of cleansing the mind, clearing out the old junk, so that we have the freedom to create and project a healthier, happier, truer version of ourselves.
There is a myth that when you sit down you should be able to quiet your mind.
I got a reality check when I joined a Vipassana retreat in 2009 where we were not allowed to communicate for ten days. No talking, writing and no use of the hand or eyes. It was very challenging for me. When you sit quietly and turn the focus inward, you become very aware of what is going on in the background of your mind. Everything will come out. Vipassana literally means “seeing things as they really are”.
After the retreat, I was able to let a lot of the past hurts, regrets, sadness, go. What I came out of the process was the awareness that things are impermanent. Our thoughts and emotions — good and easy, pleasing and difficult, unpleasant and ugly, painful and disturbing – are like clouds that come and go. This has given me the strength to handle the everyday situations of reality.
The good news is, you don’t have to sit for ten days to cleanse the mind.
You can sit and meditate for as short as three minutes. Yogi Bhajan said, “At any time which is peaceful, you’ll be surprised that in a couple of minutes, you may find yourself observing some very unpleasant, ugly thoughts while you’re meditating. If you let those thoughts pass by, this is meditation.”
The important thing is, to keep up! The mantras and meditations will do their job with a committed and consistent practice. The whole point is to cleanse the mind out and get rid of negativity that has been covering up the divine light inside you.
