Chanting mantras is not just repeating a sacred syllable to connect with your higher self and the divine. There are hundreds of thousands of mantras, each with its permutations and combinations. It’s an ancient technology, about 5,000 years old, to tune the mind on the meaning and vibration of the mantra.

As you chant mantras, it allows you to experience the vibration by becoming the vibration. Man means mind, tra means wave or projection, and putting it together translates to “to vibrate the mind.”

The power of the mantra is in its sound vibration, and through breathing, the rhythm, tone, and tongue action hitting the palate can change the brain’s chemistry and calm the nervous system.

Here are four scientific benefits why chanting mantras can improve your health:

1. Stimulates the endocrine system to release hormones. In chanting, the tongue hits the roof of the mouth, prompting the 84 meridian points – 64 in the hard palate and 20 in the soft palate. They, in turn, stimulate the glands in the brain. The hypothalamus, which creates oxytocin hormones (the love hormone), triggers the pituitary gland, the master gland, to activate all the other glands in the body.

2. Simulates the Vagus nerve, the longest nerve responsible for communication between the gut, heart, and lungs to the brain. The nerve is connected to the vocal cords. When you chant, the vibration stimulates the nerve, activating the parasympathetic nervous system to slow down the heart and breathing rates, lowering blood pressure, promoting digestion, regulating emotions, and promoting greater connection. The body becomes relaxed as well, which helps in recovery.

3. Increases heart rate variability, the fluctuation in time intervals between heartbeats. For example, if your heart rate is 60 beats per minute, the variability may be 0.9 seconds between two beats or 115 seconds. The variability indicates how adaptable your body can be. The higher the variability, the more your body can adapt to changes and become less stressed and happier. An experiment was conducted to see the effects of chanting, breathing five breaths per minute, and singing a devotional song. The graphic shows that chanting has the best impact on the nervous system, as indicated by the large variations in the heart rate.

4. Increases the production of nitric oxide in the nasal airway. This gas molecule helps dilate blood vessels (vasodilator), improving blood circulation and blood flow and reducing inflammation. The sound vibration releases nitric oxide 15x more than average.

Mantras can also refer to the thoughts and words you repeatedly say to yourself.

Buddha said, “Our thoughts shape us; we become what we think.” This is how habits become patterns. Ask yourself: what mantras are you vibrating often?

The Law of Attraction shows how we create the things, events, and people that come into our lives. Our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions produce energies that attract like energies. Negative energies attract negative energies, and positive energies attract positive energies.

So, are your thoughts and emotions negative, or are they filled with love, kindness, and peace?
