When in Iceland, you try to see the aurora borealis – the northern lights. I got to see it! It’s stunning. A friend asked me how it happens and why it only occurs in the North, like in Iceland, and am sharing what I learned about it:
The aurora borealis is a light show which happens every day. It is caused by electrically charged particles from the Sun entering the Earth’s upper atmosphere at a very high speed. Space.com explains, “Energized particles from the Sun slam into Earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph (72 million kph), but our planet’s magnetic field protects us from the onslaught. As the Earth’s magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles, the dramatic process transforms into a cinematic, atmospheric phenomenon that dazzles and fascinates scientists and skywatchers alike.” Our polar regions are where the magnetic field is weakest. That’s why the countries closest to the arctic circle can view the lights.

The lights come and go. They may only show up for a few minutes, then glide away before returning. A good display may last for no longer than 15-30 minutes at a time. We were fortunate because we got to see it longer. I couldn’t stay as long as it was freezing!
We also used three different apps and a website to make sure we caught the lights. The ones I recommend the most are the Hello Aurora app and the Vedur.is website.
