Ghost Month is here. Weddings get postponed. House moves get delayed. New businesses wait. Even seasoned investors turn cautious.

This year, Ghost Month runs from August 13 to September 10 with the Hungry Ghost Festival on August 27. In Chinese folk tradition, the seventh lunar month marks the return of spirits and ancestors to the world of the living. Families observe it differently. Many honor ancestors. Many make offerings.

Here is what surprised me. Ghost Month shows up in financial research too. A study in Taiwan found stock trading volume dropped significantly during Ghost Month. A 2012 analysis of the Philippine Composite Index, covering 1987 to 2011, found the market declined during the seventh lunar month about 60% of the time. The average decline was roughly 3%.

This does not mean Ghost Month causes markets to fall.
A 2023 study in IIMB Management Review looked at five Asian markets, including the Philippines. It found higher stock return volatility in the Philippine market during the Hungry Ghost Festival period. But the researchers stopped short of saying the festival had a clear effect across every market they studied. The evidence was inconclusive.

So what explains the pattern? Belief shapes behavior. If enough people believe it is not the time for major moves, they trade less. They postpone purchases. They wait. When many people slow down at the same time, that shift shows up in markets and in everyday economic activity.

You do not need to believe in ghosts or follow Chinese custom to take something useful from this month. For me, it is a reminder to pause before acting.

A few Do’s and Don’ts
1. DO pause and prepare.
Review your plans. Finish what is unfinished. Get ready for what comes next.

2. DO remember those who came before you.
For those who observe Ghost Month, honoring ancestors matters deeply. For everyone else, this can simply be a moment to remember the people who shaped your life.

For families who observe the tradition, food, incense and offerings are a way of honoring ancestors during the seventh lunar month.

3. DO respect the tradition.
You may see food offerings, incense, and other practices, especially in Chinese-Filipino communities. You do not have to take part. You can still respect those who do.

4. DON’T rush a decision because you feel pressured.
Ask yourself: does this really need to happen now?

5. DON’T make financial decisions out of fear.
Ghost Month is an interesting subject for research. It is not a reason to sell your investments or stop investing. Markets move for many reasons.

You do not have to believe Ghost Month brings bad luck. You can simply stay curious about the tradition and take from it what serves you. For me, the message is simple. Pause. Reflect. Prepare. Then move when the time is right.

In loving service,
Rosan
