Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice that focuses on forgiveness, reconciliation, and personal healing. At its core, Ho’oponopono is about restoring balance and harmony within ourselves and in our relationships with others. I’ve been practicing this for 10 years now.

The word “Ho’oponopono” roughly translates to “to make things right” or “to correct an error.” It’s a practice of taking responsibility for our thoughts, words, and actions, recognizing our interconnectedness with all life. By acknowledging our role in creating or perpetuating imbalance, we open ourselves to the possibility of healing and transformation.

The power of Hoʻoponopono lies in a simple four-phrase mantra:
I’m sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
I love you

When repeated with sincerity and intention, these four phrases have the ability to release us from the burdens of guilt, shame, resentment, and other negative emotions. Reciting the mantra affirms our willingness to open the door to forgiveness, both for ourselves and for others.

Here’s how to do Ho’oponopono

To practice Ho’oponopono, find a quiet space where you can be alone and undisturbed. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and bring to mind the person, situation, or aspect of yourself that you wish to heal. Slowly repeat the four-phrase mantra, allowing the words to sink in with each repetition. You can do this silently or aloud for as long as you feel called. Some find it helpful to set a timer and practice for a specific duration, such as 5-10 minutes. I usually recite the mantra 7 to 8 times each morning and throughout the day when needed.

The benefits of Ho’oponopono

Whether you’re seeking to resolve a conflict, let go of past hurts, or cultivate more self-love and compassion, Ho’oponopono is a powerful tool that can guide you on your journey of healing and transformation. By taking responsibility for our role in creating imbalance and expressing remorse, gratitude, and unconditional love, we can restore harmony within ourselves and in our relationships.

May this practice mend your relationships or put you on the path to more intentional ones that can help give a sense of inner peace and clarity. Remember, the journey of healing is an ongoing process, and Ho’oponopono is a gentle yet profound companion along the way.

In loving service,
Rosan
