Meditation is a process. It is the process of cleansing the mind. The length of time to  meditate generates specific results but ultimately, the end result is to have the freedom to create and project a healthier, happier and more authentic version of ourselves to the world.

But mind you, it is a myth that you immediately quiet the mind when you sit and meditate. The mind generates a thousand thoughts per blink of an eye. When you sit quietly and turn the focus inward, you will become very aware of what is going on in the background of your mind. You will discover that your headspace becomes very noisy.

In fact, as you sit and meditate, Yogi Bhajan says, “You may find yourself observing some very unpleasant, ugly thoughts. If you let those thoughts pass by, this is meditation. Meditation is a cleansing process. The important thing is to keep up! The mantras and meditations are doing their job. You’re cleaning out and getting rid of the negativity that has been covering up the divine light inside you.”

I’ve been teaching meditation every Tuesday at 5 pm for some time now. We’ve been doing different kinds of meditations – breathwork, chanting, dynamic movement, and so on, and the time varies from as short as 3 minutes to 22 minutes long. I often hear, “I don’t have time to sit and meditate.” If you don’t have time, there are meditations for as short as 3 minutes, such as the Three-minute Har for Prosperity. And the longest I’ve taught was 62 minutes long during the lockdown, a meditation to overcome challenges and be able to survive and thrive. The class was once a week at 3:00 am.

Her are the specific effects of the length of time to meditate:

3 minutes: Increases blood circulation and distributes the neuroendocrine secretions throughout the body.

7 minutes: Brain frequency waves start shifting from Beta waves to Alpha (calming) waves and can continue into deep relaxation Delta waves. At the same time, the electromagnetic field around the body increases in strength.

11 minutes: Changes the glandular system and the nerves.

22 minutes: Balances and coordinates the three minds (negative, positive, neutral). Anxiety-producing thoughts in the subconscious start to clear.

31 minutes: Total balance in the endocrinological system is achieved. This will affect the whole mind, your aura, and the body’s internal elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether) and reflect changes in mood and behavior.

62 minutes: Changes the gray matter of the brain. It integrates the subconscious “shadow mind” and the outer projection.

2 ½ hours: Holds the new pattern in the subconscious mind throughout the cycle of the day.

And now for a forecast:

Today is a Full Moon (2:39 am Manila time). With our bodies composed of up to 70% water, the Full Moon not only affects the tides of the ocean but the tides in us as well. Those who have not trained their minds through meditation may be susceptible to the extreme mental fluctuations on this day.

I’m sharing this meditation I taught last Tuesday called Gupt Gian Shakti, the secret power of knowledge. It will help you access your Truth. Chanting this meditation will help give you the power to tune into your Truth and will train your mind to be more present, observe more, and think less. The mantra is Ra (Sun), Ma (Moon), Sa (impersonal infinity), Sat (Truth), Hari/Har (Creative Infinity)

Gupt Gian Shakti meditation

Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine. Interlock fingers with the right index finger on top and join the thumbs stretching them back to point straight up. Hold the hands in front of the chest between the solar plexus and the heart. Heels of hands are joined, and arms are relaxed. Allow the eyes to close. Focus on the breath and the sound of the mantra as you chant. Inhale deeply and completely exhale as the entire mantra is chanted once: RA RA RA RA, MA MA MA MA, SA SA SA SAT, HARI HAR HARI HAR. Do this for 11 minutes. Then, sit quietly and listen to the silence within. It may speak to you, now or later. Make yourself available with no expectations.
