Tomorrow, January 25, marks the new lunar cycle.
The first day of the year based on the Chinese lunar calendar falls on the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice. This calendar varies each year depending on the lunar placement.

People know that In Chinese astrology, there are 12 animal signs and four elements: fire, earth, metal, and water. This year, the new lunar cycle falls on the first animal sign and the element is metal. Thus, this is the Year of the Metal Rat. Festivities actually begin today and continue for 15 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival.

What’s in store for the year?

The Rat animal sign is inquisitive, shrewd and resourceful, clever, quick thinkers and successful. The Year of the Metal Rat is seen as a strong, prosperous, and lucky year, and is a great year for starting projects or improving ongoing ones.

Traditionally, the days before the Chinese New Year are days to prepare for a new beginning. This is the time to clean your house or office, move furniture around to the direction that would bring most luck. The annual Feng Shui flying star, pictured above, indicates that the Southeast corner will bring windfalls of good fortune, the Northeast sector for victory, the Northwest corner for financial wealth, the West corner for prosperity, and the Southwest sector for romance and travel opportunities.

Cleaning, clearing, and asking for forgiveness are powerful ways to let go of anything that ties you to the past. As a physical exercise of releasing, you may want to clear your closets and donate some of your stuff or make some noise in your home or office by using bells or a crystal bowl.
