It is expected to be even hotter in Manila this month! The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration PAGASA) warns of hotter days and nights, potentially reaching over 40 degrees Celsius.These extreme weather conditions may likely persist until June.

The extreme heat poses health risks, including heat-related ailments such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, sunburn, rashes, and potentially life-threatening heatstroke. Factors such as high heat index, vigorous physical activity, dehydration, alcohol consumption, and overdressing may exacerbate these conditions. Infants, children, and seniors over 65 years old face a higher risk of heat-related illnesses.

To prevent heat-related illnesses, it is recommended to limit the amount of time spent outdoor, drink plenty of water, avoid tea, coffee and alcohol, schedule intensive tasks during cooler times of the day, dress in light, loose-fitting attire, reduce strenuous activities during hot spells, and always apply sunscreen. Individuals with chronic conditions should receive guidance from healthcare providers to safeguard themselves from heat-related risks.

In Kundalini Yoga, there is a breathwork technique that can help cool the body.

It’s called Sitali Pranayama. This breathwork adds moisture to the system, and in the wisdom of Ayurveda, soothes a pitta imbalance.

Here’s how to do the breathwork: Sit comfortably with a straight spine. Curl the tongue into a “U” shape outside the lips. Inhale deeply through the rolled tongue as if you are sipping through a straw, exhale through the nose. Make the breath long and heavy. Some people may find it difficult to curl their tongue. In this case, simply stick the tongue out of the mouth and breathe over the tongue.

This breathwork practice also offers relief from fatigue and hypertension and aids in controlling anger episodes. In this case, practice for 3 minutes and hydrate afterward. Notice a shift from agitation to calmness in your nervous system.
