Wet season is upon us — strengthen your immune system!
Your immune system is your body’s first line of defense against disease. There are many ways to strengthen the immune system. One is through vigorous exercise to work up a sweat, which contains acids that make the skin inhospitable to bacteria. A vigorous workout can also clear the mind.

Another way is to do a pranayama (breathing technique) meditation, specifically Breath of Fire,  a panting-like breath that clears mucous and toxins from the body.  Kundalini Yoga founder Yogi Bhajan said, “It can give you a disease-free body, a clear, meditative mind and develop your intuition, but it requires practice.”

I am going to share a pranayama meditation that I usually start with in class.  This is regarded as an advanced immune therapy that hits at viruses and bacteria. Here, the right nostril is blocked and the breath is through the left nostril. The left nostril controls the right hemisphere of the brain. The right side of the brain stores many of the diffuse negative emotions such as anger, defeat, blame that lead to depression and to a lower functioning immune system.

This pranayama mediation stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and the right hemisphere to adjust itself.  You may go through various emotions as the glands start to shift their balance and then feel light, energized and positive.

Try this meditation, especially if you feel under the weather

Sit in a comfortable crossed-legged position or in a chair with the head covered (otherwise, you might get a headache). Bend the left arm and raise the hand up to shoulder level. The palm faces forward. ouch the tip of the ring finger to the tip of the thumb (this is called Surya mudra). Place the right thumb against the right nostril, gently closing off the right nostril. Eyes are turned inward at the brow point. Begin a steady, powerful Breath of Fire. Emphasize the beat at the navel; the navel must move. Do this for 3 minutes and gradually increase the time to 5 minutes, then to 11 minutes.

Afterwards, inhale deeply and hold the breath. As the breath is held, interlace all the fingers and put the palms in front at a level just below the throat (in front of the heart, at the thymus), about 14 inches away from the body. Pull the fingers apart with all force. Resist and create a great tension. Repeat this sequence 3 more times. On the last exhale, discharge the breath by blowing through your upturned lips, with the tongue curled back on the roof of the mouth. This will seal the upper palate upward. Then relax.

Note that there are two major cosmic events next week. On July 26, Mercury goes retrograde. The planet Mercury is the messenger of the Gods and rules communications. It sends messages to help us in our path. Look at what you have manifested in your life so far and think about how your thoughts help or hinder this process.

On July 28 is a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse,  a must-see because this is the longest eclipse this century.  According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the eclipse will start at 1:13 am (Philippine time) and will end at 7:30 am (unobservable). The ‘great eclipse’ occurs at 4:21am. This is where you’ll see the full moon turn into red or ruddy-brown color hence it’s referred to as the ‘blood moon’.
